Lawn Laying Services in Woolwich

We handle everything from stripping the old lawn and rotovating the soil to laying fresh, premium turf.

Winter Waterlogging & Clay Compaction

The Problem: Heavy SE18 London clay retains water in winter, turning garden lawns into unusable, boggy mud baths.

Our Fix: We excavate the top 15–20cm, incorporate organic compost and grit to break up clay particles, and create subtle falls or soakaways for standing water.

Shade from Boundary Walls

The Problem: Tall Victorian brick boundary walls cast deep shade across narrow Woolwich gardens, causing grass to thin out into moss.

Our Fix: We prepare the soil bed and lay specialist shade-tolerant fescue turf blends engineered for lower light urban gardens.

Uneven Sub-Grade & Dips

The Problem: Decades of natural soil settlement leave lawns bumpy and uneven, making mowing difficult and catching mower blades.

Our Fix: We rotovate, grade, and level the entire area with premium screened topsoil before precision laying fresh turf rolls.

Our Turf Installation Process

STEP 1

Site Assessment & Clearance

We check sun/shade, drainage, and soil type, then strip back old turf, roots, and weeds to bare earth.

STEP 2

Soil Preparation

We rotovate to 15–25cm, work in organic matter (and grit on heavy clay), then rake to a fine, level tilth.

STEP 3

Levelling & Firming

We tread and firm the ground in different directions, checking with a plank for dips and a slight fall away from the house.

STEP 4

Pre-Turf Fertiliser

We rake a phosphorus-rich starter fertiliser into the top layer to give new roots a strong start.

STEP 5

Laying The Turf

We lay in a staggered brick-bond pattern with tight, unstretched joints, working off boards to protect the prepared soil.

STEP 6

Watering & Aftercare

We soak thoroughly straight away, then keep it consistently moist for 2–3 weeks while the roots knit in before the first cut.

Preparation & Aftercare

Site Preparation

Clear the area of existing grass, weeds, roots, stones, and debris before starting any installation. Then level the ground, improve the soil or base as needed, and make sure the surface is firm but not compacted so the new finish sits properly. Good preparation is the difference between a lawn that settles well and one that sinks, shifts, or looks uneven later.

For natural turf: Dig or rotavate the soil to around 100–150mm deep, then rake it level and add quality topsoil if the ground needs improving. The final surface should be smooth, firm, and slightly moist before laying the turf so the roots can make good contact with the soil. If the soil is badly compacted or weedy, the turf may struggle to establish.

Natural Turf Aftercare

Water the turf immediately after laying, then keep both the surface and the soil beneath it consistently moist for the first 2 to 4 weeks so the roots can establish properly. Avoid walking on it as much as possible during this period, and only start using the lawn once it has knit into the ground and no longer lifts easily at the corners. In dry, windy, or warm weather, new turf may need daily watering at first.

Turf Installation Questions We Hear Across Woolwich

When is the best time of year to lay turf in Woolwich?
Autumn and spring are the ideal seasons for laying turf in Woolwich. Autumn soil is warm and naturally moist, allowing roots to knit deeply before winter, while spring laying works well before summer heat. Avoid frozen ground or midsummer heatwaves.
How deep should soil preparation be for heavy Woolwich clay?
We cultivate the top 15 to 20cm of soil, blending in rich organic compost to break up dense SE18 clay and improve aeration. We avoid mixing heavy sand directly into raw clay, as this can create a concrete-like mixture.
What is the correct watering schedule for new turf in Woolwich SE18?
Water thoroughly immediately after installation until the soil underneath is damp. In warm weather, water every evening for 2 to 3 weeks. Once roots have anchored into the subsoil, you can gradually reduce watering frequency.
When can I do the first mow on my new Woolwich lawn?
Wait 2 to 3 weeks until the turf roots have taken hold. Test by gently tugging a corner of the turf—if it resists, it is ready. Set your mower blade to its highest setting and cut no more than one-third of the grass blade height.
How long does it take for visible seams between turf rolls to vanish?
With daily watering, visible join lines between rolls typically disappear within 14 to 21 days as the grass shoots grow together and roots knit into the topsoil.
How can I prevent my Woolwich lawn from becoming a mud bath in winter?
Improving sub-surface soil structure with organic matter during installation, ensuring proper grading, and choosing healthy, deep-rooted turf rolls prevents surface water pooling and keeps winter mud at bay.
