Thamesmead is a distinctive part of South East London — a planned 1960s new town built across the former Erith and Plumstead Marshes, with grid-laid estates, lakes, and green corridors around Southmere Lake. That marshland history matters for any landscaping project: gardens here sit on heavy clay with underlying reclaimed ground, which behaves differently to typical London clay and needs more careful groundwork. We focus strictly on hard landscaping and do not provide ongoing lawn maintenance (mowing, weeding, feeding) or tree surgery.
Because so much of Thamesmead sits on former marsh, standing water and poor natural drainage are the defining challenge for any garden project. We excavate deeper than a standard build, lay a geotextile separation membrane, and compact a full MOT Type 1 sub-base with proper drainage falls before any patio, decking or fence goes in. This is the same rot-and-waterlogging-first approach we already use on our fence repair work in neighbouring Abbey Wood, just applied here to new installations rather than repairs.
To suit Thamesmead's mix of low-rise estate housing and newer regeneration-era builds, we focus on frost-proof, slip-resistant (R11) porcelain paving and low-maintenance Millboard and Trex composite decking, alongside Western Red Cedar fencing for privacy on overlooked plots near the estate walkways.
