Luxury Decking in Battersea: Composite, Hardwood & Softwood
Luxury decking in Battersea means getting a lot out of a small, overlooked garden. We build Millboard and Trex composite, Balau and Ipe hardwood, and C24-framed softwood decks across SW11, from Park Town and Battersea Park to Northcote Road and Clapham Junction. Founder-led by Billy Maddox & Vincent O'Connell.
Decking in Battersea: Victorian Terraces, Long Narrow Gardens and Outdoor Rooms
Much of Battersea is Victorian and Edwardian terraced housing, where the back garden is long and narrow, often shaded by neighbouring walls and by the house itself. A well-built deck turns that strip into a usable outdoor room, and it is a good fit where the ground floor sits above the garden and you need one level step down.
Wandsworth is a south-of-the-river borough, and parts of Battersea sit close to the Thames, so ground conditions vary from street to street. We look at levels, drainage and access on a free survey before we quote.
Which Decking Suits a Battersea Garden?
In a small, shaded garden, composite is hard to beat for practicality: there is no oiling, and the boards do not go green and slippery as quickly as untreated timber. Millboard in a muted wood tone sits well against London stock brick, and Trex gives a cleaner, more contemporary line.
If you want the look and warmth of real timber, Balau or Ipe hardwood is the premium choice, and pressure-treated softwood on a C24 frame suits a tighter budget. Our composite vs timber decking comparison and Millboard vs Trex guide cover the trade-offs.
What Our Battersea Site Survey Looks At
Every Battersea garden is different, so the free survey checks the things that decide how the deck should be built:
- Access: how materials reach a terraced garden, through the house or a side return, which affects how the job is planned.
- Levels: the step from the back door, and how much fall the garden has, which sets frame height and steps.
- Light and shade: how much sun the space gets, which helps decide between composite and timber.
- Ground and drainage: whether the soil holds water, and whether a ventilated, raised subframe is needed.
- Conservation areas: whether your street falls inside one of Wandsworth's conservation areas, which include Battersea Park, Park Town Estate and Westbridge Road.
Whatever the board, every deck is built on a C24 strength-graded timber subframe over a breathable membrane, with joists at 400mm centres (300mm for diagonal layouts) and airflow underneath.
Planning, Conservation Areas and Flooding: What to Check Before Building a Deck in Battersea
Under the Planning Portal rules, garden decking is normally permitted development if it is no more than 30cm above the ground, covers no more than 50% of the garden together with any extensions and outbuildings, and is not forward of the front wall of the house. A raised deck above 30cm, or any decking within the grounds of a listed building, needs planning permission, and in a conservation area decking at the side of the house is not permitted development either.
Wandsworth Council has several conservation areas in Battersea, including Battersea Park, Park Town Estate and Westbridge Road, so check whether your street is in one before assuming a deck is allowed. This is general guidance, not planning advice; always confirm with the council before building. Parts of Battersea are close to the Thames, so riverside streets are worth checking against the Environment Agency flood map. Our full guide to planning permission for decking in London covers every rule in detail.
